Pope Francis' coffin rests on a century-old Malay carpet / The glory of Iran in the heart of the Vatican and history
In one of the world's most historic religious moments, Iranian craftsmanship shone once again. During the farewell ceremony for Pope Francis at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, his coffin was placed on an authentic handmade carpet  from  the city of Malayer; a carpet over a hundred years old that symbolizes the authenticity, beauty, and cultural bond between Iran and the Vatican.
The farewell ceremony for Pope Francis, held at the Vatican on May 25, 1404, was accompanied by a display of Iranian art. Pope Francis' coffin was placed on a hand-woven carpet from the city of Malayer; a carpet measuring 5 by 7 meters, more than a hundred years old, and woven especially for the Vatican.
Malayari carpets are known for their delicate weave, high knot density, use of natural wool, and authentic plant dyes. The designs of these carpets mainly include bergamot motifs, floral backgrounds, and warm and pleasant colors that represent the ancient traditions of Iranian carpet weaving. The carpet used in this ceremony, while maintaining these characteristics, is considered a noble symbol of the art of Iranian handlooms.
The use of Persian carpets in official Vatican ceremonies has a long history and is a long-standing tradition in which exquisite Persian carpets are used in important and official ceremonies. One of the most prominent examples of this tradition is the use of Persian carpets in the funeral rites of popes.
In images recorded over the past fifty years and at the funerals of previous popes, Persian carpets with designs such as Harris were used. Also, in special religious rituals such as the Good Friday prayer service, the Pope has often been seen kneeling on a Persian carpet.
